Making a planning application
You can apply for planning permission yourself or employ an agent to do it for you. Your planning application must include the correct fee and a location map showing the site you want to develop.
Asking the planning office for advice
If you think you need to apply for planning permission, contact your council’s local planning office. They'll tell you if you need planning permission.
They can:
- tell you material to include with your application such as drawings
- confirm the planning application fee
A guide to help applicants understand the information that will be required when applying for planning permission or for other types of consent is also available.
Submit a planning application
You can use the Planning Portal to submit planning applications to the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) and 10 of the 11 councils. (Mid Ulster District Council has its own system.)
You will need to register for an account to use this service.

The Planning Authorities will process your information in line with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) requirements. A copy of the full Privacy Statement is available under the Terms and Conditions on the Planning Portal.
You can also submit your application in hard copy. The application forms are also available to download from the Planning Portal.
